Podcast Insights: Why Understanding Your Customers’ Changes How You Grow

This post is based on a conversation I had with Odum Idika from the Unconventional Mindset podcast, where we explored what drives customer growth and why so many marketing activities fall short.

When executive conversations turn to customer growth, most businesses jump straight to tactics like more content, better ads, or a sharper pitch.

In my experience, those tactics only work when they are built on a solid foundation, starting with a clear understanding of the customer at a human level.

In this interview, I talk about why customer growth rarely stalls due to a lack of ambition. More often, it breaks down when businesses begin from their own perspective rather than anchoring their decisions in their customers’ reality.

Shifting that starting point changes how everything else comes together.

Why My Experience Matters

In the conversation with Odum, I shared a bit about my journey and why I approach marketing the way I do. Over the years, I have worked across a variety of industries and business sizes, from startups figuring out product-market fit to larger companies refining complex business strategies.

I have seen firsthand how small misalignments between customer understanding and business messaging can stall growth, and how research-led insight can lead the way to opportunities that improve performance over time.

Early in my career, I was very lucky to spend significant time in roles that required me to dig into operations data, customer behaviour, and market trends. That hands-on experience taught me how to translate data and research into clear insights that could easily support actionable strategies. It is why I do more than advise on marketing. I help teams put insight into practice, from positioning and messaging to strategy execution.

In every project, my goal is the same. I make sure marketing aligns with what customers actually need and value, informed by evidence.

The experience I have gained over the years working in these B2B and B2C industries gives me a perspective that helps me identify opportunities others might miss and help companies act on them with confidence. I have been briefed on numerous business challenges and goals. Helping companies use a customer-first lens to achieve their goals is something that never gets old for me.

Most Marketing Fails Because it Starts Internally

Many businesses begin their marketing by talking about what they offer, how they are different, or why they are proud of their work. While those things matter, they often overlook the customer’s perspective or unique pain points.

Customers are looking for answers to their problems and confidence in their decisions. When messaging is built from the inside out, it tends to lean heavily on features and benefits, or it assumes that customers have already decided it’s the best solution for them. Marketing is not that easy, folks!

Customer-led marketing flips the perspective. It starts with how customers see the world, what they are trying to achieve, and what stands in their way at the level of their day. When you take the time to understand what is going on in their day, you learn very quickly how to become relevant and position your brand. It’s not enough to understand the problem on its own. You have to get to know your customers more. Especially, if you want to show up in all of the places customers can discover solutions.

Using a framework to evaluate whether your strategy aligns with customer priorities can help you identify where your messaging may be missing the mark.

Customer Research Leads to Strong Positioning

In my conversation with Odum, I emphasized that research is not a phase you rush through. It is the foundation that supports every strategic decision that follows.

Good research replaces assumptions with evidence. It provides the language customers use, the moments that drive decisions, and the criteria that matter most.

You do not need overly complex methods to get high-value insights. Often, the most useful learnings come from:

  • Conversations focused on buying decisions and trade-offs
  • Reviewing objections and hesitations from real prospects
  • Identifying patterns in customer language and behaviour
  • Validating ideas before scaling them

When research is done well, it brings clarity: teams align faster, messaging sharpens, and priorities become easier to set.

When you have a consistent method for collecting customer data, you can turn it into a strategy. This can feel overwhelming and challenging, which is normal. You will learn many different things through customer research, and knowing which ones serve the business most today is a very important step. To help with this, I created a structured framework for turning customer research into a marketing strategy, making the process much more actionable.

Value is Defined by the Customer

One theme that came up repeatedly in the Unconventional Mindset conversation was how often businesses define value from the inside out.

When you define value through customer insight:

  • Messaging becomes simpler and more focused
  • Offers feel more relevant and compelling
  • You attract customers who are aligned long-term
  • Your customers become advocates

Customers define value by the progress they make, the confidence they feel, and the friction they overcome. When your messaging reflects that perspective, your brand stands out not because you are louder, but because you connect with your customers.
